SEMINAR
Coal Mine Methane Capture and Utilisation
5th November 2007 - Hotel Oberoi Grand, Kolkata

Introduction
Biogas Technology Ltd, UK and MMRT Instrumentation Pvt.Ltd, India are proud to announce their Joint Venture Company Biogas Technology (India) Pvt. Ltd. for promoting and exploring opportunities in the coal mining industry in India.

Biogas Technology (India) Pvt. Ltd. was incorporated in July 2007.

Seminar Objective
The objective of the seminar is to provide a forum for discussion and interactions amongst the experts and participants to discuss the methodologies & technology.

The main objective of the Joint Venture Company is the promotion and exploration of project opportunities involving the capture of methane and its potential utilisation for power generation from active or abandoned coal mines. These projects would be developed under various Climate Change Mitigation schemes and the generated electricity would be sold locally.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas (GHG), 21 times more harmful than CO2 and its capture and destruction contributes towards the global effort for reduction of harmful emissions which contribute to climate change. Although harmful, methane is a valuable fuel source which can be utilized in various ways. If collected in sufficient quantity and of sufficient concentration, it can be used as a renewable fuel source for power (electricity) generation. More importantly the capture of methane, particularly in coal mines, creates a safe environment for the people working in and living in the vicinity of any such facility.

Schemes, such as the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) under the Kyoto Protocol and various other voluntary schemes promote the reduction of harmful emissions and have created an incentive for governments and companies to invest in technologies and processes to reduce, capture, utilize and control these harmful emissions. Verified reductions are measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent and are popularly called Carbon Credits. These Carbon Credits can be sold on various global emission reduction markets, thus creating revenues to incentivise and aid the funding of such projects.

Date and Venue
The Seminar will be held at Kolkata on 05th November 2007 at The Oberoi Grand, 15, Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Kolkata – 700 013.
